Abstract
This study aimed at identifying the image of the General Directorate of National Security among a sample of Algerian citizens and the role of public communication in improving that image, in addition to addressing how the public police facility employs its official Facebook page to enhance its mental image .The student relied on the intentional sample with regard to the field study by distributing the questionnaire form to a number of citizens of Constantine state, as well as for the analytical study in which the student analyzed the content of a number of the Directorate’s publications on its official Facebook page, in addition to conducting a semi-directed interview with the Head of Communications and Public Relations Office of the state of Constantine national security.Furthermore, The descriptiveanalytical approach was adopted as a method of study by describing and analyzing the role entrusted with public communication in improving the image of the General Directorate of National Security. At the field study level: - 62.7% of the respondents are male, and 37.3% are female. - 63% of the study sample items are between the ages of 18-28 years, and 25.3% are between 29-39 years old, while 11.66% are 40 years old. - 76% of the respondents have a university level of education, and 18.7% have a secondary level, while 4.3% have a middle school level, whereas 0.7% of the respondents have a primary level, furthermore 0.7% do not have an educational quaification. -The public communication strategy did not succeed effectively in providing a good definition of the services provided by the police public facility which could be considered as a direct reason for the negative perception formed by a number of items about the General Directorate of National Security. - 67.3% of the respondents confirmed that their confidence in the Directorate and its interests is acceptable. - 51.7% of the respondents confirmed that they sometimes cooperate with the employees of the departments of the General Directorate of National Security. - 35.7% of the respondents affirmed that their lack of cooperation with the staff of the General Directorate of National Security is due to the complexity and length of the procedures. - 62.6% of the respondents confirmed that they prefer using social network sites to obtain information related to security questions and issues - 51.6% of the respondents of the study sample confirmed that they prefer to use television to obtain information related to security questions and issues. - The majority of the respondents confirmed that the means of communication used by the Directorate contribute effectively to improving its image among them. - 80.8% of the respondents emphasized that the weak qualifications of some of the Directorate's employees in communication and the absence of a culture of dialogue among them constitutes an obstacle to the public communication approach adopted by the General Directorate of National Security in improving the image of the police public facility. - 80% of the respondents confirmed the absence of security awareness among the Algerian citizen as one of the obstacles that prevent the success of the public communication approachadopted by the General Directorate of National Security in improving the image of the police public facility. - The public communication strategy effectively contributes to improving the image of the General Directorate of National Security for a significant number of the sample of the study, however it failed with another section. Furthermore, the direct interaction of the Directorate’s employees contributes significantly to forming the mental image of the police public facility in the research sample. At the level of the analytical study: - The General Directorate of National Security employs the directorate’s Facebook page to improve the image of the police public facility by highlighting the various activities and tasks carried out by the various departments of the directorate, and marketing the professionalism of its members in performing the tasks assigned to them, as well as clarifying a number of positive features that distinguish the interests of the police public facility.
