The objective of this work is to study the effects of the incorporation of a 50/50 blend of Epoxidized Natural Rubber / Polypropylene-grafted maleic anhydride (ENR/PP-g-MA) as a compatibilizing agent (CA) for a thermoplastic elastomer based on a 50/50 Nitrile Rubber / Polypropylene NBR / PP blend on the rheological and mechanical properties. Several formulations of this type of elastomer containing different concentrations of CA (from 5 to 15 Phr) were prepared by mixing in the molten state Nitrile Rubber and Polypropylene using a Brabender plasticorder. The rheological behavior was examined by means of a Brabender plasticorder. The mechanical properties were determined by the tensile measurements. The Brabender plastograms as well as FTIR analysis revealed that upon mixing ENR reacts with PP-g-MA and a crosslinked structure results. Evidence of compatibilizing effects was obtained from an improved mechanical properties; which was attributed to a reduction of the interfacial tensions and an enhanced interphase interactions imparted by the CAs.
