Item Biological activities of Spirulina platensis microalgae powder(Faculty of Sciences, 2024) MAT, Wissem; ZÉRIDA, Ines; AGGOUN, AsmaSpirulina, a filamentous cyanobacterium, is a source of antioxidants and has antibacterial potential. Quantitative analysis of certain bioactive compounds revealed the presence of chlorophyll a (18.31 mg/g); chlorophyll b and carotenoids were present at concentrations of 9.94 mg/g and 1.91 mg/g, respectively. Phycocyanin extraction was performed using a solvent and also by maceration in glycerol. The latter method yielded a higher concentration of phycocyanin (0.26 mg/ml) and higher purity (0.91) compared to the solvent extraction method (concentration: 0.21 mg/ml and purity: 0.83). The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH free radical inhibition test. The IC50 values of the ethanolic and hydro-ethanolic extracts were 0.69 mg/ml and 0.65 mg/ml, respectively. Antibacterial activity tests showed that Spirulina extracts exhibited inhibitory effects against various tested bacterial strains, with the ethanolic extract showing superior activity.
